Overview and Projects

Palawan Environmental and Aquatic Conservation, and Education
(PEACE ONE)

PALAWAN CULTURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL CENTER:

Palawan Environmental in association with Environmental Three (ecologic, economic and social) has been surveying potential cruise ship destinations among the Calamian Islands group.

During a rapid survey conducted January, February and March, 2009, contacts were re-established in Boracay, Coron and Linapacan paving the way for, a PEMS team, returning in July, August and September to conduct and document anchorage availability for second generation cruise ships, island esthetics, tour attractions and to survey cultural interests, available physical and human resources, as well as all the transportation logistics required to support an effective/viable comprehensive business plan. Focus will be on the development of eco-, ethno- and adventure resources, to be hosted, as much as possible, by indigenous people willing and interested in supporting such minimally-intrusive tours consisting of five-hundred to three-thousand passengers arriving on regularly scheduled five to ten hours visits.

Our site development process is in-keeping with the international cruise line conventions established in 2003 and take seriously the minimization of (negative) impact on both environment and culture.

These preliminary surveys do not imply any certainty of site selection until contracts are entered into and registered with the government.

TERESTRIAL PROJECTS:

Butterfly Sanctuary and Environmental Center:
This project will be located in a seven hectare valley in the hills between Coron and the Buswanga Airport. The sanctuary will be housed within the largest bamboo structure in the world representing nature's fragility within Palawan’s tropical paradise. It will be a collaboration between national, provincial and local governments, the mayor of Coron, leading citizens and the broader international community. This PEMS initiative offers a tourist destination rivaling any other in its scale, delicate beauty and environmental sensitivity.

The sanctuary's structure will be a latticework of woven bamboo rising to a height of twenty meters creating an enclosed space surrounded by an array of five twenty meter domes, like the petals of a great flower. When seen by air or from the Coron Cross, a local tourist destination, the structure will appear as a blossoming flower open to the tropical sun with a large butterfly perched at its center. Within this towering facility a myriad of fluttering butterflies representing every region of the Philippines fluttering around natural streams and waterfalls, trails with benches, an open air restaurant, tea garden, reading room and art gallery, each offering pause and reflection to travelers and residents alike. This project will become a première location for environmental and healthcare seminars, lectures, poetry and music presentations, even weddings. Its multiuse space will offer an environmental and cultural center for residents and a destination for visitors to the area. A night “Sleeping with the butterflies” will be offered to highlight the experience of a lifetime and a memorable visit to Buswanga.

MARINE PROJECTS:

Coastal Preservation and Water-Cottages:
Sand theft, illegal logging and reef degradation (cyanide and dynamite) lead the list of environmental destruction in Northern Palawan and badley needed coastal protection remains ineffective limited to litigation and transient patrol’s. Meanwhile the environmental infrastructure of a fisher folk culture is being destroyed.

Establishing effective coastal protection requires effective incentives and community empowerment. This PEMS Peace initiative offers a multifaceted approach to the problem, a strategy that will reduce illegal activities through community involvement and on site protection, additional education, scientific investment and the prospect of alternative tourist-based incomes tailored to each region and every community. Municipalities and independent Tagbanua borangay villages would have opportunity to sponsor one, two or more water-cottages within their region. These floating and/or stilted structures would each be designed to house international environmental and marine studies projects, scientific research facilities, student groups, recreational programs, tourist accommodations and local education facilities as well as an alternative income and coastal protection. This strategy empowers villages with economic and environmental control.
